Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured a guaranteed $200,000 prize following their 1-0 triumph over Botswana in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Thursday.

The win in Casablanca, their second in two games, not only extended Nigeria’s perfect record at the tournament but also made the Super Falcons the first team to book a place in the quarter-finals, with a game to spare.

The cash prize translates to approximately ₦305 million when converted to Naira, marking a major financial boost for the reigning African champions.

The Falcons sealed the victory with a late goal in what was a nervy contest, reaffirming their dominance in Group B. Their focus now shifts to their final group stage match against Algeria on Sunday, with top spot already secured.

This year’s WAFCON comes with a revised prize structure announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), aimed at raising the profile and competitiveness of women’s football on the continent. Under the new format, all quarter-finalists receive at least $200,000, a significant leap from previous editions.

A semi-final exit would see Nigeria earn $350,000, while finishing as runners-up guarantees $500,000. However, victory in the final will hand the Super Falcons a record-breaking $1 million, the highest prize ever offered in the competition.

CAF has also ensured that every participating team receives compensation. Third-placed teams in each group will earn $150,000, while bottom-placed teams will take home $125,000. The move signals a bold commitment to bridging the gap between the men’s and women’s tournaments in Africa.
