NPFL Title Race Heats Up: Finidi Eyes Remo Stars as Ogunmodede Warns of Tough Battle

Rivers United coach Finidi George remains confident his team can close the 11-point gap on league leaders Remo Stars as the 2024-25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) enters its decisive phase.
After a strong start to the season, Rivers United lost momentum and slipped from the top, but recent form—two wins, two draws, and just one loss in their last five games—has reignited their title hopes. A hard-fought goalless draw against 3SC in Ibadan further boosted Finidi’s belief that a comeback is possible with 11 matches remaining.
“We won’t stop fighting,” the former Super Eagles coach declared. “This league is unpredictable—anything can happen. Yes, we’ve had setbacks, but we’re getting back to our best at the right time. Remo Stars are strong, but they can drop points too. We just have to stay focused and take it one game at a time.”
Finidi’s immediate focus is on their next home fixture against Niger Tornadoes, where they’ll look to build on their recent momentum.
Remo Stars Boss Acknowledges Pressure
Meanwhile, Remo Stars coach Daniel Ogunmodede admits the title race is far from over, despite his side’s comfortable lead. A narrow 1-0 win over Plateau United—courtesy of Samson Olasupo’s goal—kept them on top, but Ogunmodede senses the pressure mounting.
“The last five games have been tough,” he said. “As we get closer to the end, every match feels like a final. Even our penalty decisions show the tension—Sikiru let the captain step up this time, but it’s not fear, just the reality of high stakes. We know it won’t be easy.”
Rangers Celebrate Onyebuchi’s Super Eagles Call-Up
In other news, NPFL champions Rangers International have congratulated defender Ifeanyi Onyebuchi after his inclusion in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
The rugged centre-back, who played a key role in Rangers’ title-winning campaign last season, joins NPFL stars Ahmed Musa, Kayode Bankole, and Papa Daniel Mustapha in Eric Chelle’s 39-man list.
“From dominating the NPFL with Rangers to earning a Super Eagles call-up—Buchi is ready for the big stage!” the club posted. “Congratulations, champ!”
With the title race heating up and players earning national recognition, the NPFL continues to deliver drama and excitement.
