Gunmen Attack Ebonyi Community, Leaving Several Dead
A deadly attack rocked the Amegu Nkalagha community in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State in the early hours of Sunday, as suspected gunmen stormed the village, killing multiple residents and setting houses on fire.
Reprisal Attack Linked to Cattle Killing
Reports indicate that the assault may have been a reprisal attack following the alleged killing of cattle belonging to herdsmen in the area. The gunmen, heavily armed, unleashed terror on the community, leaving behind a scene of devastation.
Eyewitness Account
A community leader, Prof. Ndubuisi Idenyi, confirmed the attack, stating that the extent of the casualties was yet to be determined.
“I don’t have the exact number of casualties right now. We are still searching for and retrieving bodies, especially those killed while working on their farms,” he said.
Religious Leader Among Victims
Sources also revealed that a pastor of a Pentecostal church in the area was among those killed in the attack.
Rising Concerns Over Security in Ebonyi
The attack has raised fresh concerns about security challenges in Ebonyi State and the increasing wave of violence in rural communities. Residents are calling on the government and security agencies to take swift action in ensuring justice and preventing further attacks.
