Bobbi Kristina, the only daughter of late singer Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown is dead. She died Sunday, July 26, at the age of 22 at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, GA.
“She is finally at peace in the arms of God,” the Houston family said in a statement. “We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months.”
Kristina was found unconscious on January 31, 2015 in a bathtub at her Roswell, GA, home, and she’d been in a medically-induced coma since she was rushed to a nearby hospital back then. The event that led to Kristina’s death was very similar to how her mother, Whitney Houston, ended her own life.
Whitney Houston was found dead in a bathtub on February 11, 2012, at the age of 48. Autopsy confirmed she had died accidentally from drowning, even in the face of heart disease and excessive cocaine use.
Kristina was found unresponsive just like her mother in her bathtub – by her cousin YK Kennedy. “Krissi doesn’t do drugs,” he said. “She hasn’t been drinking or doing drugs and she’s cut down on cigarettes. She’s been trying to get her music together and keep her voice clean. Her voice is so beautiful.”
Kristina’s parents, Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown divorced when she was just a teenager. Her parents were professional musicians, and the gospel singer Cissy Houston, was her maternal grandmother; and singer Dionne Warwick, was her mother’s cousin.
And it was no surprise that Kristina took up music as a career too – having performed a duet with her mother Whitney several times before she passed on. Kristina did one album “One Wish: The Holiday Album” with her mother, and also performed with her during a televised concert in Central Park. And she was on The Houstons: On Our Own, a Lifetime reality show.
Kristina claimed to have married Nick Gordon in 2014, a young man whom Whitney Houston took into her household as a child and who lived with them till adulthood. Kristina once referred to him as “big brother. Everyone believed Whitney Houston adopted Gordon as a son, and Kristina’s announcement that they were married took everybody by surprise – with Kristina even brandishing a wedding ring in her photos.
“My mom never adopted him,” she wrote on Facebook when the media speculated on the nature of their relationship considering the fact that they grew up together as children under one roof. “In fact, mommy was the one who even said that she knew that we were going to start dating. My mom knows me better than any of you.”
But father Bobby Brown never accepted that his daughter and Gordon were legally married and would not allow him to see her in the hospital; even as Bobby Brown’s family engaged in a protracted battle with Whitney Houston’s family over Kristina’s reliance on life-support and $20+ million fortune as the sole heir of Whitney Houston’s estates. But in May, Bobby Brown and Bobbi Kristina’s aunt Pat Houston were named Bobbi Kristina’s co-guardians.
Celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Missy Elliot, Rosie O’Donnell took to Twitter to pay tribute to Bobbi Kristina at her passing yesterday. Others were Erykah Badoula, Reverend Al Sharpton, Reggie Bush, Taraji P. Henson, Jermaine Dupri, Salt N Pepper, and others too numerous to mention. And of course, your own dear writer, Charles I. Omedo too!
